[from 15:20]

AHA: "... The Dutch native relationship to the immigrants was first they came as … guest workers, and then later as asylum seekers, many of them, and they were people who were going to go away - they were temporarily in Holland and the would leave. They came with their different ways of life, their culture, their habits, their religious practice, and all of this were viewed as a temporarily thing, but it became only more permanent. And the attitude of the government and society towards immigrants was one of just helping them, and it was a one way traffic. Minorities who receive help, minorities who receive space that they can practice their religious beliefs.

But after the 11th of September, the assumption of the government, for many decades, that the second and third generation will assimilate without any problem did not meet reality. The second and third generations were rejecting in Dutch, in perfect Dutch, rejecting the system, they were rejecting democracy, individualism, and mainly the acceptance of the rights of women and homosexuals. So I started to writes articles and give interviews saying “If the desired assimilation of Muslims is to become successful, then we have to enmancipate Muslim women, and that means confronting religious convictions, tribal convictions, and the way these values are still very much a part of the life of second and third generation immigrants. That’s what caused not only a conflict between me and the Muslim immigrants, but also among some of the Dutch who had already been themselves ...well, who had adopted the ideas of multiculturalism, that it was possible to reconcile tribal Islamic values with modern liberal secular values. And that problem still goes on."

DH: "So some say that the Netherlands who have a reputation as being one of the most tolerant countries in the world is even prepared in some cases to tolerate intolerance. Is that a fair or an unfair characterization?"

AHA: "Is is changing. But in the 1990s and still in government today, the Social Democrats and a larger group of the Christian Democrats are devoted to the idea that time will take care of the problem of intolerance as long as that intolerance is perpetrated by minorities. Islam as a religion has been propagated over and over again to not only the Dutch population, but I think to all western populations that it is a religion of peace, and that there is a small group of people who have perverted the religion and that that fringe group can only be isolated if we continue to spread, in my opinion, the myth that Islam is peace and just give it time. There would be intolerance, but tolerating that intolerance will eventually kill it, and I think that is a great mistake that not only the Dutch are making, but many European countries are making."

"Seven years after the 11th of September I can't say who's winning. But I hope, I wish, that we had the same conviction and confidence to fight back now. If that happens we can win so easily. Because Muslims, millions of Muslims, want freedom."
