David Berlinski svarar ateismens jihadister

David Berlinski intervjuas på Uncommonknowledge. Han har kritiserat de hätska attackerna mot troende, inte minst kristna, från exvis Richard Dawkins och Sam Harris. Ur förordet på hans bok The Devil's Delusion:

"The discussion has been ceded to men who regard religiousbelief with frivolous contempt. Their books have in recent years poured from every press, and although differing widely in their style, they are identical in their message: Because scientific theories are true, religious beliefs must be false. Harris has conveyed the point by entitling an essay “Science Must Destroy Religion.” His call to jihad cannot be long delayed.

If science stands opposed to religion, it is not because of anything contained in either the premises or the conclusionsof the great scientific theories. They do not mention a wordabout God. They do not treat of any faith beyond the one that they themselves demand. They compel no ritual beyond theusual rituals of academic life, and these involve nothing morethan the worship of what is widely worshipped. Confident assertions by scientists that in the privacy of their chambers they have demonstrated that God does not exist have nothing to do with science, and even less to do with God’s existence. In all this, two influential ideas are at work. The first is that there is something answering to the name of science. The second is that something answering to the name of science offers sophisticated men and women a coherent vision of the universe. The second claim is false if the first claim is.

And the first claim is false. Nothing answers to the name of science. And Nothing has no particular method either, beyond the immemorial dictates of common sense."

TV: Seminariet "Tro och vetenskap"

Debatter om vetenskap och tro anser jag ofta blir tramsiga, men denna, där Christer Sturmark och fysikprofessor Ulf Danielsson debatterar med matematikprofessor John Lennox och Stefan Gustavsson, har ändå vissa kvaliteter.

Ateism vs. tro/kristendom. Hitchens vs. D'Souza

Det här är intressant! Eller underhållning. Antagligen både och.

I Sverige drevs ju på 50-talet en livlig diskussion om Gud och kristendomens roll i samhället, där filosofen Ingmar Hedenius var drivande.

I dag är ju Christoffer Hitchens en av de mer dedikerade advokaterna för att Gud inte finns och kan väl vara värd en parafras på de ord som en gång gavs Hedenius: "Det finns ingen Gud, och Hitchens är hans profet".

Har förresten, när jag nu postar detta, bara sett ett par klipp och kommenterar dem inte mycket mer än att jag tycker att D'Souzas argument känns relevanta. Sannolikt ett ovanligt hårt motstånd för Hitchens.

D'Souza tycker jag bland annat har en poäng i att Hitchens lägger ner obegripligt stor energi på att motbevisa något han inte tror finns. Förhoppningsvis kommer de in på frågan om mening. Ska kolla alla klipp så fort jag hinner... Underhållande är det definitivt! I alla fall för mig.

Drar mig förresten just nu även till minnes kristnas förmaningar i min barndom, att Gud och tro inte kan eller bör diskuteras intellektuellt. Möjligen med hänvisning till Bibeln. Det ligger nog något i att enbart förståndsargument är otillräckliga (gäller nog f ö de flesta beslut där sånt som intuition och förtroende krävs). Men intellektuell debatt är ju knappast fel, ens ur kristet perpektiv; minns t ex påvens omdiskuterade tal om tro och just förnuft. Intellektuella meningsbrytningar kan knappast skada ett ämne, då de leder till fördjupade perspektiv.

Men jag antar att, i vanlig ordning, båda sidor stärks av denna debatt. ;-)
